The story behind
Stop This Train, according to DoReSol
In *Stop This Train*, John Mayer delves into a deep reflection on the passage of time and the inevitability of aging. The lyrics, described as some of his most sincere, use the metaphor of a constantly moving train to illustrate life, one that cannot be stopped. It is a journey where the protagonist initially resists the idea of growing up and facing mortality, but ultimately reaches a serene acceptance that time continues its course and one must move forward. The guitar sound in the song is designed in a very particular way, seeking to emulate the noise of a moving train, which contributes to the listener feeling part of that journey.
This track is part of the album Continuum, released in 2006. The recording sessions for this album spanned between January 2005 and July 2006, covering studios in Los Angeles, such as The Village Recorder, and in New York City, including Avatar Studios and Right Track/Sound on Sound. It was also recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The production was handled by Steve Jordan, who, in addition to being a drummer, contributed his vision to a sound that leaned more towards blues and soul, marking an evolution from his previous work more focused on pop rock. Bassist Pino Palladino also participates in the album; Mayer, Jordan, and Palladino had been touring the previous year under the name John Mayer Trio, even releasing a live album, Try!. In fact, two songs from that live project appear in studio versions on Continuum. By August 2019, Stop This Train had accumulated around 51 million streams on Spotify.
