The story behind
Vultures, according to DoReSol
In Vultures, John Mayer and his collaborators created a piece that envelops you from the first moment. The rhythmic foundation is solid, with a bassline that sets the path in a very particular way, courtesy of Pino Palladino, and constant percussion handled by Steve Jordan. The song feels like a journey, blending influences of blues, soul, and R&B to create an introspective atmosphere, with a melancholic touch that invites reflection. Mayer's voice is expressive, conveying a vulnerability that perfectly complements the solos and guitar riffs that Jordan helps to highlight.
This track is part of the album Continuum, released in September 2006. The recording sessions for this album extended from January 2005 to July 2006, spanning studios in different cities such as Los Angeles (The Village Recorder), New York City (Avatar Studios and Right Track/Sound on Sound), and Memphis, Tennessee (Royal Studios). The production was handled by Steve Jordan, and this work marked an evolution in Mayer's sound, delving deeper into blues and soul. It is interesting to note that Mayer, Jordan, and Palladino had already been working together the previous year under the name John Mayer Trio, and even released a live album, Try!. In fact, two songs from that live project were included in studio versions on Continuum.
