Clube da Esquina

Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges recorded an album together in 1971, before the first one went on his own path. It was a work on two discs, released in March 1972, and it was recorded in a place that seemed more like a studio than a beach house. The idea was to mix things that don't usually go together: MPB, folk, jazz pop, and even a bit of rock or psychedelia. All of that in the middle of a country in the middle of political tension, and the album spoke about things like friendship, freedom and youth.

About the album

Clube da Esquina, according to DoReSol

The cover of the album shows two boys on a road near a town, in a place where the adoptive parents of Milton lived. It was made by a photographer named Cafi. At first, people didn't understand much about the album. They criticized it as if it were something simple or meaningless. But over time, it started to be valued and ended up becoming an album that is often listened to. It was chosen as the best Brazilian album of all time in 2022, and also appeared on a list of important albums in 2024.

After that first album, there was a second one, Clube da Esquina 2, in 1978. At that moment, the band expanded, and more musicians were included. Milton remained the main singer, but Lô didn't participate much, and names like Elis Regina, Chico Buarque and Francis Hime were added. The collective was formed in the 60s in Belo Horizonte, where Milton moved to study and started working with the Borges brothers. It was there that everything began.
