San Vicente is one of those tracks that sneaks into the album and stays. With its two minutes and forty-seven seconds, it doesn’t need more time to make it clear that it’s no ordinary song: it sounds like a sunset on the beach, with that blend of acoustic guitar and voice that seems to float in the breeze. The live recording — or at least with that air of controlled improvisation — gives it a different weight, as if every note breathes alongside the listener.The song was recorded in November 1971 in two places: Praia de Piratininga, in Niterói, and the Estúdios Odeon in Rio. It was a complicated time for Brazil, with the military dictatorship at its peak, and the album Clube da Esquina — where it appears — reflects that tension in its sound, but also in its lyrics. Here, Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges created something that goes beyond MPB or baroque pop: it’s a crossroads where folk, jazz, and even a touch of rock blend seamlessly.
