The story behind
“Cais” doesn’t sound like the rest of Clube da Esquina. Most tracks on the double album by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges stretch into long melodies, with layers of voices and guitars weaving together like a living fabric. But this song cuts off at two and a half minutes, with a voice that lingers in the air and a guitar that barely emerges between the silences. There are no adornments, no choruses, just a clean line that seems to trace the edge between what fades away and what remains. It’s as if the track had been recorded in a single gesture, with no time to think twice.
They recorded it in November 1971, in two different places: first at Praia de Piratininga, in Niterói, where the sound of the sea seeps between the strings, and later at Estúdios Odeon in Rio de Janeiro, where they balanced the voice and instrument. The album was released the following year, in March 1972, under the EMI-Odeon Records label, but “Cais” already carried that urgency of someone who knows they’re touching something that will never sound the same again. It wasn’t just another song from Clube da Esquina: it was the moment when the music turned intimate, like a whisper lost between the wind and the concrete.
