The story behind

Nuvem cigana, according to DoReSol

Gypsy Cloud floats like a sigh between folk and jazz, with an air that recalls those days when Brazilian music sought to breathe amid the weight of the dictatorship. Recorded in just three minutes, the song captures that blend of melancholy and freedom that defines the album Clube da Esquina, where Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges wove a double album that still sounds fresh today. The track is not just a song: it is a bridge between the intimate and the collective, between the beaches of Piratininga and the Odeon studios in Rio, where everything was recorded in November 1971.The album was born at a time when the country was under political tension, but Gypsy Cloud does not sound like protest: it sounds like escape.

Milton’s voice rises with that characteristic falsetto, while the guitar and wind arrangements paint a landscape that ranges from baroque pop to smooth jazz. There is no forced virtuosity here; there is a naturalness that makes the song work just as well in a small room as on a large stage. Later, in 1992, Milton would revisit that sound in O Planeta Blue Na Estrada Do Sol, but by 1972, it was all there, in those three minutes of Gypsy Cloud.
