Vox Dei

Vox Dei was an Argentine rock band that was born in Quilmes, in the area of Buenos Aires. They formed in 1967, starting by playing songs by The Beatles and other groups of the time. At first they were called Mach 4, but in 1969 they changed their name to Vox Dei when the label Mandioca gave them the name. They were asked to sing in Spanish, so they decided to do it and kept the name.

The group had Rubén Basoalto on drums, Ricardo Soulé on guitar and vocals, Juan Carlos "Yodi" Godoy also on guitar and vocals, and Willy Quiroga on bass and vocals. At first Soulé was the bassist and Quiroga the guitarist, but soon they switched. Quiro, stayed on bass because they were looking for a more specific sound for that instrument.

Biography

In 1969 they recorded a single under the name of Mach 4. Later, after a show in a place called Macu, the producers offered them to record something for the label Mandioca, but with Spanish lyrics. So they decided to change their name to Vox Dei. In one of those performances, Luis Alberto Spinetta congratulated them, but didn't understand why they had a language to sing in and didn't use it. At that moment they translated the lyrics of *Bitter Sugar* to *Azúcar amargo*, which became one of their first songs.

The first album by Vox Dei came out in 1970, it was called *Caliente*. They recorded it with Mandioca and presented it along with bands like Almendra and Manal. In that album was *Presente (El momento en que estás)*, which became a hymn of Argentine music. There was also *Canción para una mujer (que no está)*, which also became famous. The album was presented at the Teatro Ópera de Buenos Aires, along with other groups, and they received good reviews.

In November 1970 they participated in the first B.A. Rock festival, where they played an advance of *La Biblia*, an conceptual album based on the Bible that came out a little later. The album was well received and became a milestone in Argentine rock.
