Almendra

When we talk about Almendra, we dive straight into the heart of Argentine rock. It all began in 1967 in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires, with a group of talented young musicians: Luis Alberto Spinetta on guitar and vocals, Edelmiro Molinari on guitar and backing vocals, Emilio del Guercio on bass and backing vocals, and Rodolfo García on drums. These young musicians, along with bands like Manal and Los Gatos, laid the first foundations of rock in Argentina. Although their first period was brief, from 1967 to 1970, they left an indelible mark. They reunited again between 1979 and 1981, and once more in 2009.

Almendra's first album, simply titled Almendra, is a gem of Argentine rock. In 1985, a survey by Clarín crowned it the best album in the history of national rock. And rightly so, as Rolling Stone magazine ranked it sixth among the greatest Argentine rock albums, while their second work, Almendra II, earned the number 40 spot. The song «Muchacha (Ojos de papel)» is another landmark, considered the second greatest Argentine rock song of all time.

More about Almendra

Biography

Almendra's story has its roots in two bands from the Alto Talleres neighborhood: Los Larkins and Los Sbirros. Rodolfo García led Los Larkins, while Edelmiro Molinari fronted Los Sbirros, alongside Emilio del Guercio and his brother Ángel. Spinetta played in both bands, and gradually brought the musicians together to form what would become Almendra. During their school years, Spinetta and Del Guercio shared more than classes; they formed a duo called Bundlemen and even put out a newspaper in which they satirized their teachers.

Before becoming Almendra, Los Larkins went through several name changes, such as Los Masters and Los Mods. Under this last name, they recorded an acetate in 1966 with two songs in English. Finally, at the end of 1966, the merger of Los Mods and Los Sbirros gave rise to Almendra, with Spinetta, García, Del Guercio, Molinari, and Santiago "Chago" Novoa on keyboards. Thus, at just 16 years old, Spinetta and Del Guercio were already ready to leave their mark on music.
