The story behind
When approaching Figuración, you encounter a piece that departs from the conventional. It's an acoustic theme, but its complexity is revealed in the unexpected rhythmic twists and dissonances that invite you to pay attention. The lead vocals, handled by Luis Alberto Spinetta, intertwine with almost depersonalized-sounding choirs, creating a particular atmosphere. What strongly contrasts with that feeling is the sweetness of the transverse flute, played by Emilio del Guercio, which adds a melodic air to the structure. This combination of elements, the direct lyrics, and the instrumentation, anticipates the more elaborate compositions that Spinetta would develop later on.
This song is part of Almendra's debut album, released in 1969. At that time, Spanish-language rock was taking its first important steps in Argentina, and this record became a key reference point. Figuración, as the third track, is associated with the image of the tear that appears on the album cover, representing "themes that are in the shine of the thousand-year tear that the man on the cover cries." In the recording, in addition to Spinetta on guitar and vocals, and Emilio del Guercio on flute, Edelmiro Molinari on guitar, Rodolfo García on drums participated, and Pappo joins with his deep and rough voice on the recited choirs, contributing to that feeling of emotional absence that, according to Spinetta, represented consciousness.
