Só Pra Contrariar

The sound of Só Pra Contrariar (SPC) is characterized by its fusion of samba and pagode, with a special focus on romantic interpretations. Formed in 1989 in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, the group quickly stood out in the 1990s, becoming one of the most popular within the Brazilian music scene. Their self-titled album, released in 1997, was a major success, selling over 3 million copies and ranking as one of the best-selling albums in the history of Brazilian music. Songs like "Que Se Chama Amor" and "A Barata" are emblematic examples of their style, combining romantic lyrics with catchy rhythms that invite dancing.

A key moment in SPC's trajectory occurred in 2002, when Alexandre Pires decided to leave the group to focus on his solo career. This change allowed his brother, Fernando Pires, to take over the leadership and vocals of the group. Despite Alexandre's absence, SPC continued to innovate and explore new paths, as evidenced in their 2003 album Produto Nacional, which moved away from romantic ballads to embrace a more diverse sound rooted in traditional samba. This quest for freshness continued in their next album, Produto Nacional II, released in 2004.
