Paolo Conte

Paolo Conte is a musician who doesn’t stick to just one craft. A jazz-trained pianist, painter, and former lawyer, his sound blends swing, melancholy, and a humor that seems plucked from an old painting. He’s not the typical singer-songwriter who repeats formulas: his songs sound like salon jazz mixed with lyrics that dance between the poetic and the ironic, as if every chord wore an invisible top hat.

What defines his career isn’t just his deep voice and phrasing style, but the moment in 1974 when he decided to leave law behind and dive headfirst into music. By then, he had already written hits for others—like Azzurro or Insieme a te non ci sto più—but it was when he took on the role of performer that his style found its own path. In 1979, with Un gelato al limon, French and even American audiences embraced him as a revelation. He never aimed for commercial success, yet his music had something that connected without needing explanations.

Biography

His most remembered albums don’t follow a chronological order; instead, they jump between eras. Via con me and Lo Zio date back to the eighties, when his lyrics still carried that irreverent touch that made him famous. Then came Aguaplano in 1997, a double album where jazz turns more intimate and melodies stretch like watercolors. In the nineties, after Una faccia in prestito (1995), his music grew more reflective, as if each song were a pencil sketch. He even designed a musical, Razmataz, which he eventually released in 2000 as a collection of standalone songs, proving his creativity knows no bounds. In 2008, Psiche closed that chapter with 15 new tracks, where each piece seems painted with words. And though in 2021 he was granted honorary citizenship of Scurzolengo, he remains, above all, a musician who plays so that jazz and poetry keep dancing together.
