Los Prisioneros

When one encounters the music of Los Prisioneros, it is easy to feel that direct connection born from honesty. Since their beginnings back in 1983, this Chilean trio, made up of Jorge González, Claudio Narea, and Miguel Tapia, dedicated themselves to exploring sounds ranging from *new wave* with *punk* touches to *synth pop*. What truly made them resonate, however, were their lyrics. They spoke of the reality they lived, the concerns of a generation under a complicated context, and that, without seeking it directly, became a voice for many. Despite facing censorship in the media, their music found its own path, achieving a reach that crossed borders, reaching places like Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

The journey of Los Prisioneros was not linear. In 1989, Claudio Narea left the band, marking a first major change. González took over on guitar, and Cecilia Aguayo and Robert Rodríguez joined for live shows. This phase culminated in the group’s split in early 1992. During their first stage, they released four albums. In fact, three of them, *La voz de los '80* (which reached position 3), *Corazones* (position 9), and *Pateando piedras* (position 15), were recognized among the 50 best Chilean albums of all time by the Chilean edition of *Rolling Stone*.

More about Los Prisioneros

Biography

After a period of individual projects, the band reunited in 2001 to perform two massive concerts at the Estadio Nacional, drawing over 140,000 people. This was followed by a tour across Chile, Latin America, the United States, and Spain. However, tensions resurfaced in 2003, leading to Narea’s departure once again. González and Tapia attempted to carry on with other musicians, releasing a final album in 2004, but internal differences led to the group’s definitive dissolution in early 2006. Despite their split, songs like *«El baile de los que sobran»* remain a reference point in social movements, proving the lasting power of their message.
