The story behind
Los Prisioneros released Tren al sur as the first single from their album Corazones, in May 1990. The song has two versions: a long one of five and a half minutes, and a shorter one, edited for the single. The lyrics are personal, talking about a train journey towards the south, and mixes with childhood memories of Jorge González. The music is catchy, with a base that reminds one of Touched by the Hand of God by New Order.
The video, directed by Cristián Galaz, begins at the Central Station of Santiago and shows the musicians traveling by train. There are also children playing, as part of the childhood of the artists. The song was rejected by the radios upon release, because it was said that Los Prisioneros were no longer relevant. It only gained popularity after the video's premiere. The charango that appears in the song was an idea of Gustavo Santaolalla, to give it a Latin American touch.
