Café Tacvba

Café Tacvba doesn’t sound like anyone else. Their music is a journey that leaps between rock, Mexican folk, and sounds that seem invented in the moment. The voice of Rubén Albarrán—sometimes high-pitched, other times guttural—blends with instruments ranging from the tololoche to the jarana, creating something that doesn’t fit into any box. It’s not rock with mariachi, nor electronic with ranchera: it’s a dialogue between the ancestral and the modern, where every song sounds as if it were recorded in a Mexico City market at three in the morning.

Everything began in the bars of the city center, when the band—then called Grupo Torah—played covers of English songs with original lyrics in Spanish. But the turning point came when they adopted the name of a café in the historic center, changing the “U” to a “V” to avoid legal trouble. In 1992 they released their first album, Café Tacvba, and within two weeks sold over forty thousand copies. Songs like Las persianas or María played on radios across the country, but what was most interesting wasn’t the commercial success, but how each track seemed like a collage of rhythms: from the street rap of Chilanga banda to the futuristic electronics of Revés.
