Os Mutantes

From Os Mutantes, Brazilian music found a way to express itself that broke the mold. Formed in 1966 in São Paulo, this group stood out for its boldness in fusing rock and roll with Brazilian rhythms and themes. Imagine an era where the electric guitar was just beginning to carve out a place in the country, and they were already experimenting with effects like *feedback* and distortion, something that resonated with what bands like The Beatles or The Beach Boys were doing, but with an unmistakably local touch. Their irreverence and experimentation were their hallmark, both in the studio and in their performances, paving the way for a musical hybridism that had never existed before.

The career of Os Mutantes lasted until 1978, leaving behind a legacy of nine albums. What’s interesting is that two of these works, O A e o Z and Tecnicolor, were only released in the 1990s. It was at that moment that the world of rock, both in Brazil and internationally, began to recognize the true magnitude of their creativity, considering them one of the most original and daring groups of the psychedelic era and in music history.

More about Os Mutantes

Biography

The story of Os Mutantes has roots that go back to the 1960s. The Dias Baptista brothers—Cláudio César, Arnaldo, and Sérgio—grew up in the Pompeia neighborhood of São Paulo. Their interest in music, especially rock, awakened in the early 1960s, alongside the genre’s growing popularity in Brazil. Arnaldo, for example, sold a gold coin to buy a fretless Del Vecchio bass, while Cláudio César, initially interested in the saxophone, ended up playing the guitar, even receiving a blue Fender Jaguar from his father. Their mother, Clarisse Leite, a pianist and music teacher, played a key role in teaching them musical theory and nurturing their passion for instruments. In 2006, the band reunited with key members like Sérgio Dias and Dinho Leme, and the following year, they released "Mutantes Depois," an unreleased song that marked the return of their sound after decades.
