The story behind
Adeus Maria Fulô, according to DoReSol
Adeus Maria Fulô by Os Mutantes is one of those songs that sounds like nothing else. Recorded in 1968, it blends psychedelic rock with a rhythm that seems taken from a street carnival, but with guitars that twist like in a dream. The lead vocals flow between melodic and distorted, as if the singer were telling a joke while the world around them crumbles into impossible chords. It's not just a song: it's an experiment where the Brazilian and the foreign collide without warning, and the result sounds like something never heard before. The album where it appeared, also titled Os Mutantes, was released in June 1968 on LP.
By 1992 it was already available on CD, and in 2006 it was reissued under labels like Polydor, Omplatten, and Universal. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 9th among the 100 best Brazilian albums, but the most interesting part is how the band recorded everything live, without studio fixes, letting mistakes and spontaneous ideas remain trapped in the vinyl. The song itself lasts 3:05, just enough time for chaos and melody to shake hands before the album ends.
