Os Mutantes

This first album by Os Mutantes, released in 1968, is where they truly defined their sound. Imagine a mix that took the energy of The Beatles' rock and fused it with the Tropicalista movement. The latter, in turn, was an explosion that combined the hippie vibe with the roots of Brazilian popular culture. It's as if they had taken all those influences and put them in a sonic cocktail shaker, creating something that still sounds fresh and surprising today.

About the album

Os Mutantes, according to DoReSol

Within this album, there are a couple of tracks that really capture that essence. On one hand, there's Panis et circenses, a piece that, with Rogério Duprat's arrangements, was already setting the tone for the Tropicália movement, criticizing the complacency of the era under a military regime. On the other hand, we find covers like Tempo no tempo, which is a Portuguese adaptation of The Mamas & The Papas' "Once Was a Time I Thought," and Le Premier bonheur du jour, which had already been performed by Françoise Hardy. These choices show how the band took elements from abroad and made them completely their own.

The album had a reissue in 1999 through Omplatten Records, and then in 2006, Universal Records took charge of reissuing and remastering it, demonstrating the continued interest in the band. It's interesting to note that this work was recognized by important publications: Mojo magazine included it in its list of the "50 Most Influential Albums of All Time," and Rolling Stone placed it in prominent positions on lists of Brazilian and Latin rock albums.
