The story behind
Tempo no tempo, according to DoReSol
When Os Mutantes recorded Tempo no tempo in 1968, they were looking for something that sounded different from everything else being heard in Brazil. It wasn't just a song: it was a three-minute experiment where psychedelic rock blended with Brazilian rhythms without prior notice. The result was a short track, but one with an energy that didn't fade over time. Recorded in a modest studio in São Paulo, the track captures that immediacy: voices intertwining with distorted guitars and percussion that doesn't follow traditional meter. There are no unnecessary fills; every note seems designed to last just the right amount and no more.
The song appeared on their debut album, Os Mutantes, released in June of that same year. The record was first issued on vinyl by Polydor Records, but over time it reached other formats: in 1992 and 2006 it was reissued on CD, and in the U.S. it was first distributed by Omplatten Records and later by Universal Records. The album did not go unnoticed: Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 9th on its list of the 100 best Brazilian albums. But beyond rankings, Tempo no tempo remains an example of how tropicalismo could break borders between the local and the global without losing its essence.
