The story behind

Senhor F, according to DoReSol

The first time I heard Senhor F, I was hooked by the very first chord: that distorted sound weaving into a rhythm that never quite settles. It’s not a clean, repeating beat, but something that moves with a playful cadence, as if the song breathes in three and a half beats. That, combined with the overlapping voices that shift without warning, means every time you listen, you uncover a new detail in the bass or the drums. It’s not a song that lets itself be easily pinned down, but that’s exactly where its magic lies: it demands your attention.

They recorded it in 1968, amid a moment when Brazilian rock was trying to blend what was happening abroad with what already existed at home. The album Os Mutantes came out on an LP that same year, but it wasn’t until decades later that it was reissued on CD—first in 1992 and then again in 2006—by which time it had already earned a spot on lists like Rolling Stone’s. What’s striking is that, at just two and a half minutes long, Senhor F feels complete, without any need for filler. It’s not a song aiming for epic grandeur; instead, it sticks to the essentials: a riff that lingers and a chorus that repeats like an echo, yet always with an unexpected twist.
