Erasmo Carlos

Erasmo Carlos, born Erasmo Esteves in Rio de Janeiro in 1941, became a key figure in Brazilian rock. From a young age, his path was marked by a deep connection with music, exploring sounds from rock and roll to bossa nova. His adolescence unfolded in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, an environment where he met other music-loving youngsters like Tim Maia and Jorge Ben. It was in this context that he met Roberto Carlos, a meeting that, according to accounts, happened after witnessing a concert by Bill Haley.

The formation of bands was a natural step in his early days. After going through The Sputniks with Tim Maia and Roberto Carlos, and later The Boys of Rock, the vocal group adopted the name The Snakes. This ensemble even accompanied figures like Cauby Peixoto in his rock-inspired ventures. Through Carlos Imperial, Erasmo Carlos, now using his stage name, began working as an assistant and later as a vocalist for Renato & Seus Blue Caps in 1962. This stage was crucial, as it not only brought him closer to the record industry but also led him to collaborate on the Portuguese version of "Splish Splash," a song that, when recorded by Roberto Carlos, solidified their legendary songwriting partnership.

Biography

The 1960s saw Erasmo Carlos establish himself in the Brazilian music scene. In 1964, he signed with RGE, a label more focused on MPB and samba but which bet on him for the emerging "iê-iê-iê" market, a local reflection of Beatlemania. Alongside Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa, he became one of the most visible faces and main composers of *Jovem Guarda*, a movement that gained great popularity from 1965 with the namesake television program. During his time at RGE, he recorded albums accompanied by bands like Renato e seus Blue Caps and Os Fevers. After *Jovem Guarda* ended, Erasmo Carlos explored sounds closer to bossa nova and MPB, recording a version of "Aquarela do Brasil" in 1969.

By the 1970s, after moving back to Rio de Janeiro and signing with PolyGram, Erasmo Carlos continued his musical evolution. In this stage, the label gathered a notable roster of MPB artists, and it was there that Erasmo recorded albums blending his rock roots with contemporary trends. Influenced by the Tropicália movement and American Black music, he produced a series of standout works throughout the decade, such as *Carlos, Erasmo...* (1971), *Sonhos & Memórias 1941-1972* (1972), and *Pelas Esquinas de Ipanema* (1978). This phase culminated in a period of great commercial success in the early 1980s with albums like *Erasmo Carlos Convida...* (1980).
