Caetano Emanuel Vianna Telles Veloso (Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahía, 8 August 1942), known as Caetano Veloso, is a Brazilian musician and political activist. He has been called one of "the great songwriters of the century." He is also a filmmaker and poet. He is the brother of the singer Maria Bethânia.He was born on 8 August 1942 in Santo Amaro de Purificação, a small city in the state of Bahía, Brazil. He comes from a large family that loves music, consisting of eight children, two of whom were adopted; his father was Don José Telles Velloso, and his mother was the legendary Dona Cano (Claudionor Viana Teles Veloso).

Caetano learned to play the piano at home and composed his first song, a baião, at the age of nine. When it was time for university studies, along with his sister Maria Bethânia, he moved to Salvador de Bahía, where he spent his youth and studied art at the university.In late 1966, he accompanied Maria Bethânia, who had been invited to sing in a musical play in Rio de Janeiro; he achieved his first success when she recorded his first composition.He quickly won some awards and was able to record his first album with Gal Costa: Domingo. In 1968, along with Gilberto Gil, he was one of the first pioneers of the called tropicalismo, a cultural movement whose goal was the revaluation of traditional Brazilian music.

Biography

He recorded his first solo album in 1968 called Caetano Veloso, and his music crossed borders with his controversial É proibido proibir.He was awarded several television shows. In tropicalismo, in addition to Gilberto Gil, other musicians from Bahía such as Gal Costa or Maria Bethânia were also part of it.In 1969, due to the dictatorship that plagued Brazil, he was forced to exile in London, Madrid and Tel Aviv. Three years later he returned to Brazil and recorded Araca azul, an experimental album.In 1976, he formed a group with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia, and they toured Brazil under the name of «Doces Bárbaros».

During those years, his first visit to Argentina took place, with the renowned Argentine producer Héctor Aure, who also introduced Gal Costa to the local scene.Bicho was released in 1977 influenced by his contact with Nigerian culture, where he had been for some months before. That same year he published the book Alegría, a collection of articles and poems covering from 1965 to 1976.In 1981 he had his first major success with Outras palavras, and from then on his fame spread to all corners of the world.In 1986 he recorded with the composer, singer and film director Fito Páez the album Corazón clandestino, a maxi-single that marked Veloso's first contact with Argentine rock.In 1989 Estrangeiro was released.

In 1991 he released a new album called Circuladô. The lyrics that gave the album its name were a poem by Haroldo Campos, a Brazilian poet. The cover design of Circuladô ao vivo was Caetano's idea and was released in 1992 as a master piece. In 1993 Tropicalia 2 was released with Gilberto Gil. Fina Estampa appeared in 1995 and Noites do norte in 2001. In 2006 he released Ce, an album with previously unreleased songs of his own composition.In 2003 he collaborated with Nelly Furtado, on her second album Folklore, in the song «Island of Wonder». He has won five Grammy awards. In November 2012, he was awarded the Grammy Latino as Person of the Year.
