Megadeth

When Dave Mustaine found himself out of Metallica in 1983, after having been lead guitarist since 1981 and contributing to tracks like Mechanix and Ride the Lightning, he decided to channel that energy. The idea was to create something that surpassed his former band in speed and power. On that journey back to Los Angeles, a pamphlet with the phrase "The arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to" caught his attention. From there, the name Megadeth emerged, with a slight alteration in spelling, representing annihilation of power for him. This pursuit of a unique sound materialized into a musical proposal marked by intricate arrangements, fast rhythmic sections, and the interplay of two lead guitars. The lyrics explore themes such as war, conflicts, politics, religion, death, and personal relationships, shaping a sonic identity that positioned him as a thrash metal benchmark.

The discography of Megadeth began in 1985 with the release of Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! through Combat Records. This first work, although moderately successful, attracted the attention of larger labels, which eventually led to the sale of their contract to Capitol Records. It was with their next album, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, released in 1986, that the band resonated strongly in the underground metal scene. Despite personal challenges and internal disputes that arose in the late 80s, the group continued to release material that achieved platinum certifications. Albums like So Far, So Good... So What! (1988), Rust in Peace (1990), Countdown to Extinction (1992), and Youthanasia (1994) became pillars of their catalog, consolidating their presence through international tours.

More about Megadeth

Biography

Throughout their more than forty-year career, Megadeth has been a project led by Dave Mustaine, who has remained the sole constant member. The band has experienced numerous lineup changes, including a period of temporary dissolution in 2002 due to Mustaine's arm injury. After recovering, the band returned in 2004. Bassist David Ellefson, a key figure in much of their history, rejoined in 2010 after legal proceedings, but was dismissed in 2021. The band has been recognized with multiple Grammy nominations, winning their first award in 2017 for the song Dystopia in the Best Metal Performance category. Their iconic character, Vic Rattlehead, is a constant presence in their visual art. In addition to their record production, Megadeth organized the Gigantour festival on several occasions between 2005 and 2013, and launched their own cruise experience, MegaCruise, in 2019. The most recent studio album, The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!, was released in 2022, and it was announced that the next work, titled Megadeth, scheduled for 2026, would mark the end of the band.
