The story behind
When recording Cryptic Writings, Megadeth sought a sound that would be closer to radio play. To achieve this, they decided to work with producer Dann Huff in Nashville, Tennessee, instead of Max Norman, who had been in charge of previous works. This shift in approach was reflected in the song structures, which became more accessible, and in the lyrics, which were adjusted to appeal to a wider audience. While this direction generated divided opinions among critics, who noted a departure from their thrash metal origins, the album featured tracks like A Secret Place. The composition of this specific piece is attributed to Dave Mustaine.
A Secret Place has a duration of 5:29. The recording featured Mark Hagen as engineer, while the mixing was handled by Jeff Balding. The album Cryptic Writings, of which this song is a part, was released on June 17, 1997, through Capitol Records. It was the last studio album to feature drummer Nick Menza, marking the end of the band's longest-lasting lineup to date, with whom they had recorded four studio albums.
