The story behind
The song Trust by Megadeth, released on May 8, 1997, stands out for its theme of relationships marked by a lack of mutual sincerity. This piece, which is part of the band's seventh studio album, Cryptic Writings, had a notable reception on radio and MTV, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. This makes it Megadeth's most successful single to date, surpassing tracks like Breadline and Crush 'Em. The musical composition is the work of Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, while the production was handled by Dann Huff and Dave Mustaine himself. The recording of the album, which included Trust, took place in 1996, and the record was released by the label Capitol.
In addition to its English version, a Spanish version of Trust was produced, appearing as a bonus track on the Latin American edition of Cryptic Writings and later on an international remaster of the album. Although only the chorus is in Spanish, the rest of the song maintains the original structure. This piece was recognized with a Grammy award nomination in 1998 in the category of Best Metal Performance. The song was also included in later compilations such as Capitol Punishment, Back to the Start, and Anthology: Set the World Afire, as well as the box set Warchest. An instrumental version of Trust was created for the Extreme Championship Wrestling wrestler, Jerry Lynn, and later included in the compilation ECW: Extreme Music. The album Cryptic Writings, released on June 17, 1997, was the last to feature drummer Nick Menza, marking the end of the band's longest-lasting lineup at that time.
