The story behind
The song Have Cool, Will Travel, with its duration of 3 minutes and 29 seconds, is included in Megadeth's seventh studio album, titled Cryptic Writings. This album, released on June 17, 1997, under the Capitol Records label, marked a turning point as it was the last to feature drummer Nick Menza, thus closing the band's longest-standing lineup to date, which had recorded four studio albums. For the production of Cryptic Writings, Megadeth decided to work with Dann Huff in Nashville, Tennessee, seeking a different sound from what they had achieved with their previous producer, Max Norman. The album featured twelve tracks with more accessible structures, designed for radio play, and the lyrics were also adapted for a wider audience. These changes generated divided opinions among music critics, who noted a departure from the band's thrash metal roots.
The music of Have Cool, Will Travel is the work of Dave Mustaine. The recording of Cryptic Writings involved Mark Hagen as recording engineer, while the mixing was handled by Jeff Balding. The band, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1983 by Dave Mustaine after his departure from Metallica, established itself as one of the central figures of thrash metal. Throughout its career, Megadeth distinguished itself by its particular guitar style, Mustaine's characteristic voice, musical complexity, and its lyrics, which often explored themes such as the apocalypse, politics, and war. Despite lineup changes, Mustaine remained the sole constant member and principal songwriter, accompanied in most works by bassist David Ellefson. The group accumulated several platinum and gold albums, including the multi-platinum Countdown to Extinction from 1992, and received eleven Grammy nominations, frequently appearing in the top 10 of the Billboard charts.
