The story behind
The song I’ll Get Even, with a duration of 4:24, is from Megadeth's seventh studio album, titled Cryptic Writings. This album, released on June 17, 1997, marked the departure of drummer Nick Menza, thus closing the band's longest-standing lineup at that time. For the production of this work, Megadeth moved to Nashville, Tennessee, working with producer Dann Huff, seeking a different sound from what they had achieved with their previous producer, Max Norman. The album featured more direct song structures, intended for radio airplay, and lyrics adapted for a wider audience, which generated divided opinions among critics, who perceived a departure from their thrash metal roots.
The composition of I’ll Get Even involved the collaboration of Brian Howe, Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, and Marty Friedman. The recording was handled by engineer Mark Hagen, while the mixing was done by Jeff Balding. Dann Huff and Dave Mustaine shared production duties. Megadeth, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1983 by Dave Mustaine after his departure from Metallica, established itself as one of the cornerstone bands of thrash metal. Their style is characterized by complex guitar riffs, Mustaine's distinctive vocals, and lyrical themes ranging from the apocalypse to political and sentimental issues. Throughout their career, the band has released fourteen studio albums, solidifying a legacy that includes multiple platinum and gold records in the United States, and accolades such as the multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated album, Countdown to Extinction, from 1992.
