Leo Dan

Leo Dan was born on March 22, 1942, in Estación Atamisqui, a town in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. His real name was Leopoldo Dante Tévez Coronel, although the world knew him by his artistic nickname — and another: "the Lion of the Pampas". He grew up in a humble gaucho family. At the age of 5, he already played harmonica and flute. At 16, he picked up the guitar and started writing songs. He died on January 1, 2025, in Miami, while on a farewell tour across the United States, with a residency in Las Vegas planned for that same year.At the age of 20, he moved to Buenos Aires and joined CBS — now Sony — where he signed his first record contract immediately.

The single Celia reached the top charts in just a week. What came next was a chain of songs that became radio hits: Fanny, Cómo te extraño mi amor, Estelita, Libre solterito y sin nadie, Santiago querido, Solo una vez, among many others. In 1964, he was called to Sábados Continuados on Canal 9, and later hosted his own show on the same channel: Bajo el signo de Leo. Like Leonardo Favio, Sandro and Palito Ortega — all looking at what Elvis Presley and The Beatles were doing —, Leo Dan also made the leap to cinema.Around 1966, Leo Dan and his wife Marietta Tévez moved to Spain.

Biography

There he recorded Mary es mi amor, Con los brazos cruzados, Siempre estoy pensando en ella, Cómo poder saber si te amo and Será posible amor, among others. His style started in the new wave and gradually moved towards pop rock and romantic ballad. But in the 70s, he took a turn: he started recording rancheras, and in Mexico, he hit big with songs like Esa pared and Cuando un amor se va. He also converted from Catholicism to evangelism during that time, and from then on, he started composing songs with evangelical content. From the 80s onwards, he split his life between Argentina, Mexico and the United States, where he eventually settled.

In the 90s, he entered politics within Peronism, trying to reach the government of Santiago del Estero, although without success. His music, however, continued to circulate: his songs were covered by artists from different eras — for example, the Mexican band Café Tacvba recorded Cómo te extraño mi amor. Some of his compositions were translated into other languages, and several ended up becoming football chants in Argentina.Throughout his career, he wrote 1,500 songs and sold 40 million albums. In 2012, he received a Latin Grammy Award for musical excellence. And between 2018 and 2019, one of his songs was included in Roma, the film by Alfonso Cuarón that won the Oscar and the Golden Lion, which brought him a new wave of visibility across Latin America and brought him closer to Hollywood.
