Aerosmith

Aerosmith is a musical group of rock originating from the United States, formed in Boston in 1970. The band is composed of Steven Tyler as vocalist, Joe Perry on guitar, Tom Hamilton on bass, Joey Kramer on drums and Brad Whitford also on guitar. Known as "The Bad Boys of Boston" and "Toxic Twins" due to the well-known drug addiction of their two leaders, their musical style, with an aggressive rhythm, has influences from blues and helped define the sound of hard rock and pop rock during the years 1981 to 1990.Perry and Whitford returned to the band in 1984, signing a contract with Geffen Records. However, it was not until the release of the album Permanent Vacation in 1987 that they regained the popularity they had in the 1970s.

During the decades of the 1980s and 1990s, they achieved several hits and received numerous music awards with the albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993) and Nine Lives (1997). This comeback was considered one of the most significant events in the history of rock and roll. After 46 years of live performances, they planned a farewell tour in 2017, but it was postponed due to health problems of Steven Tyler. In 2024, they announced their definitive retirement.Aerosmith is one of the best-selling bands of all time and holds the record of being the American group with the most gold and platinum albums. They have achieved 21 entries in the Top 40 of Billboard Hot 100, nine number one hits on Mainstream Rock Tracks, and have won four Grammy Awards and ten MTV Video Music Awards.

Biography

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and in 2005 were ranked number 57 of the 100 greatest artists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. In 1964, Steven Tyler formed a band called The Strangeurs, which later renamed to Chain Reaction, along with Don Solomon in New Hampshire. On the other hand, Perry and Hamilton created Jam Band, known as "Joe Perry's Jam Band", with a focus on blues. In September, Hamilton and Perry moved to Boston, Massachusetts. In 1969, Chain Reaction and Jam Band coincided at a concert. Tyler was impressed by the sound of Jam Band and thought that if he combined his classic style with the energy of that band, they could achieve something special.

In October 1970, the bands reunited again and considered the idea of joining. Tyler, who had been the drummer and vocalist of Chain Reaction, decided not to play drums in the new band, as he wanted to be the leader and main vocalist. For this reason, they contacted Joey Kramer, a drummer from Yonkers, New York, who knew Tyler and had always wanted to play in a band with him. Everyone agreed and formed the new band, although they still did not have a name. The members used to spend afternoons experimenting with drugs and watching reruns of The Three Stooges. Kramer remembered that he used to write "Aerosmith" in his school notebooks. The name came to mind after hearing the album Aerial Ballet by Harry Nilsson, which referred to an aerial circus act performed by Nilsson's grandparents.

At first, his colleagues rejected the name, thinking it referred to a book they were forced to read in school. "No, not Arrowsmith," clarified Kramer, "A-E-R-O... Aerosmith." Finally, they decided to adopt that name after considering other options such as "The Bananas", "Stit Jane" and "Spike Jones".
