The story behind

The song Somebody, which accompanies the debut single Dream On, has its roots in a fundamental blues structure. The lyrics, conceived by Steven Tyler and his friend Steven Emspak, narrate the search of a character who longs to find the ideal companion. This character feels the need for someone to share life's burdens and difficult experiences, someone who has traveled a similar path to their own. The composition of this piece dates back to 1970, and the band Aerosmith performed it frequently during the early years of the decade. The earliest recording of a performance dates back to November 6, 1970, in Mendon, Massachusetts, specifically at Nipmuc Regional High School.

The recording of Somebody took place in 1972, at Intermedia Studios, under the production of Adrian Barber, who also handled the sound engineering along with Robert Stoughton and Caryl Weinstock. The self-titled album, Aerosmith, was recorded in just two weeks in Boston, Massachusetts. This debut record, released in 1973, shows a strong blues influence, but at the same time lays the foundation for a dense and deep hard rock sound, distinctive of the era. The last time Somebody is known to have been performed was in Yokohama, Japan, on June 26, 1988, during the Permanent Vacation Tour.
