The story behind
The first time Aerosmith released Dream On in 1973, it was not an immediate national success. However, in their hometown of Boston, the song resonated immediately, becoming the number one track of the year on a local radio station and reaching high positions on others. This rock ballad, written by Steven Tyler, is known for its structure that builds increasing intensity, culminating in the vocalist's characteristic screams. The album version, with a duration of 4:28, is notably longer than the single edit of 3:25, which removed part of the intro and a chorus. This difference would be key when, in 1976, the song was re-released and reached the Top 10, exposing a wider audience to this track that, according to some critics, laid the groundwork for future rock ballads.
The genesis of Dream On dates back to Steven Tyler's teenage years, who composed the lyrics when he was 14 years old. The music, as he recalls, was born earlier, playing on a piano at home, an experience he himself links to his childhood, listening to his father, a Juilliard-trained musician. This musical piece, which he himself describes as "dreaming until your dreams come true," was recorded in 1972 at Boston's Intermedia Studio, with Adrian Barber as producer and engineer. Despite its later impact, the band recorded their debut album, which includes this song, in just two weeks. The song has been recognized over time, being included in lists of the best songs of all time by magazines like Rolling Stone and honored with its induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2018. Furthermore, in 2023, it surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.
