Gracias a la vida

When Joan Baez released Gracias a la vida in 1974, she was already a recognized figure in the folk music world. This album, released by A&M Records, is distinguished by being sung mostly in Spanish, with the notable exception of one track in Catalan. Baez conceived this work as a gesture of encouragement for the Chilean people, who were going through a difficult time under the government of Augusto Pinochet, following the tragic death of President Salvador Allende. Her commitment to human rights in Latin America was deep, and this record reflected that stance, including compositions by Chilean artists such as Víctor Jara, who unfortunately became a victim of repression after the September 1973 coup d'état, and Violeta Parra, author of the song that gives the album its title.

About the album

Gracias a la vida, according to DoReSol

The content of Gracias a la vida spans diverse geographies, with references to Mexico, Cuba, Chile, and Spain. One of the most significant pieces is "No nos moverán," which incorporates a recitation of the poem "Sube a nacer conmigo hermano" by the poet Pablo Neruda. While the album had a modest reception in the United States, it found greater resonance in South America. Upon its initial release in Spain, during the final years of Francoism, two songs, "No nos moverán" and "Las madres cansadas," faced censorship. The record features a total of fourteen tracks, among which the title song, "Te recuerdo Amanda," and "La Llorona" stand out.
