This record, the sixteenth studio album by Joan Baez, is distinguished by being mostly sung in Spanish, with a single piece in Catalan. Baez's decision to release this work at that time carried a message of encouragement for the Chilean people, who were going through a difficult period under the rule of Augusto Pinochet, following the death of President Salvador Allende. The artist always spoke out against the actions of the US government in Latin America and dedicated efforts to promoting human rights in the region.
Within Gracias a la vida, compositions by Chilean artists such as Victor Jara, who suffered torture and was murdered after the Coup d'état of September 11, 1973, and Violeta Parra are included. The production of this album was handled by Joan Baez along with Henry Lewy, and it was released by A&M Records.
