The story behind
Esquinazo del guerrillero (Guerilla's Serenade), according to DoReSol
The Esquinazo del guerrillero, also known as Guerilla's Serenade, is a piece that Joan Baez included in her album Gracias a la vida, released in 1974. This record, entirely recorded in Spanish except for one track in Catalan, became a vehicle for Baez to convey a message of encouragement to the Chilean people. She herself shared that the album sought to offer hope to those living under Augusto Pinochet's regime, following the death of President Salvador Allende. In selecting the tracks for Gracias a la vida, Baez included compositions by Chilean artists such as Víctor Jara, who suffered torture and was murdered after the September 11, 1973 coup d'état, and Violeta Parra.
Joan Baez herself, known for her critical stance on US foreign policy in Latin America and her work for human rights in the region, chose these songs to shape her message. The Esquinazo del guerrillero has a duration of 2 minutes and 42 seconds.
