The story behind
When Joan Baez recorded the album Gracias a la vida in 1974, she did so with a very clear intention: to send a message of hope to the Chilean people. At that time, Chile was going through a period of great difficulty under the regime of Augusto Pinochet, and the singer-songwriter had always been critical of the US government's actions in Latin America. Her commitment to human rights in the region was constant, and this album became a way to channel that feeling. Most of the album is in Spanish, although it includes a piece in Catalan.
The compositions chosen for Gracias a la vida come from the rich Chilean musical tradition, with songs by authors such as Victor Jara, who was unfortunately tortured and murdered after the Coup of September 11, 1973, and Violeta Parra.
