Diamonds & Rust

In 1975, Joan Baez released Diamonds & Rust, an album that became her seventeenth studio work. Although Baez is known for giving voice to songs by artists like Bob Dylan or Stevie Wonder, on this album she dares to share her own creations, such as the title track. This song, Diamonds & Rust, has a special connection with Dylan, and its resonance was such that the heavy metal band Judas Priest included it on their 1977 album Sin After Sin, making it a staple of their live performances. Later, in 1986, the folk duo The Smith Sisters covered it for their album Mockingbird, and in 2003, Blackmore's Night did the same on Ghost of a Rose.

About the album

Diamonds & Rust, according to DoReSol

The sound of Diamonds & Rust is enriched by notable collaborations. The version of Dida found here, for example, features Joni Mitchell on backing vocals. Interestingly, an alternate take of this same song had appeared the previous year on the album Gracias a la vida. The rest of the album, which totals eleven songs, explores themes such as Fountain of Sorrow, Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer, Children and All That Jazz, Simple Twist of Fate, Blue Sky, Hello in There, Jesse, Winds of the Old Days, and a final medley of I Dream of Jeannie with Danny Boy.

This album, released by A&M Records, achieved significant recognition, being certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The depth of the compositions and the quality of Joan Baez's performances on Diamonds & Rust demonstrate her ability to connect with audiences through stories and melodies that endure.
