The story behind
The melody of *Cucurrucucú Paloma* evokes, with its onomatopoeic title, the characteristic sound of the dove, a call that intertwines with the lyrics to express the melancholy of love. This piece, born in 1954 from the pen of Tomás Méndez, has transcended borders and eras, finding its way into numerous soundtracks and captivating international audiences. Its first on-screen appearance was in the 1955 Mexican comedy, Escuela de vagabundos, where it was performed by Pedro Infante himself. Later, in 1965, the film Cucurrucucú Paloma, directed by Miguel Delgado, featured it in the voice of Lola Beltrán, who also embodied "Paloma Méndez." In a more recent reinterpretation, Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso gave it an artistic twist in Pedro Almodóvar's film Talk to Her in 2002, distancing himself from the original mariachi style.
Since its first record recording in 1956, by Harry Belafonte, the song has been adopted by a long list of performers, including Luis Miguel, Rocío Dúrcal, Perry Como, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Nancy Ames, Hibari Misora, Dario Moreno, Gaby Moreno, Nana Mouskouri, Julio Iglesias, Shirley Kwan, Lila Downs, and Joan Baez, who included it on her album Gracias a la Vida. Even tenor Juan Diego Florez performed it in 2019 in a video that garnered millions of views. The album Gracias a la Vida, released by A&M Records in 1974, was a project in Spanish, with one exception in Catalan, which Joan Baez conceived as a gesture of support for the Chilean people during a difficult time, following the death of Salvador Allende and under the government of Augusto Pinochet.
