The story behind

vivir mi vida, according to DoReSol

Marc Anthony flipped Khaled’s C’est la vie into something that pulses with the flavor of salsa. The original track carried a raï rhythm with house touches, but he took it to the realm of timbales and trumpets, where every piano strike sounds like a street party. The chorus, which in French felt like a farewell, in Spanish became a celebration cry: “Vivir mi vida” doesn’t ask for resignation—it invites you to dance without looking back. The magic lies in how Sergio George’s arrangement turned a summer song into an anthem that sounds the same in a Miami rumba as in a Bogotá bar.

The recording was made in 2013 at The Hit Factory Criteria in Miami and released as a preview of 3.0, Anthony’s first original salsa album in over a decade. The song premiered on April 15 of that year, and by September, it had already won a Latin Grammy for Best Recording of the Year. But the most curious part is that the record it broke wasn’t just about awards: it stayed in the top five of Billboard Latin Songs for 51 consecutive weeks—a feat few songs achieve. Anthony performed it live at the 2013 Billboard Awards, and the video, directed by Carlos Perez of Elastic People, premiered on September 10. It wasn’t just a cover: it was a bridge between two worlds, between Algerian raï and Anthony’s New York flavor.
