Van Morrison

Van Morrison doesn’t sound like anyone else. His voice —hoarse, raw, full of nuances— seems to carry centuries of Irish tradition mixed with the fire of rhythm and blues and the weight of jazz. He’s not just a singer: he’s a storyteller who turns every phrase into a journey. His songs aren’t listened to; they’re inhabited. There are two sides to his music: one that pulses with the rhythm of soul and raw blues, and another that gets lost in long passages where the saxophone, the piano, and his voice intertwine in a spiritual, almost liturgical conversation. This duality, which some call Celtic soul, is what keeps his work from aging.

In the late 60s, after leaving the band Them —where he recorded the anthem Gloria— he signed with Warner Bros. and recorded Astral Weeks in just three sessions. The album sold almost nothing at first, but today it’s a beacon for those seeking more than chords: it’s a map of emotions where the intimate and the universal collide. Two years later, Moondance confirmed him as a major figure. Songs like Into the Mystic or Caravan aren’t just tracks; they’re landscapes that unfold with a naturalness that deceives: behind that apparent simplicity lie years of craft and an obsession with capturing the fleeting.

More about Van Morrison

Biography

If there’s one thread running through his career, it’s his refusal to repeat himself. In the 70s, while many artists were typecast, he jumped between the folk of Tupelo Honey, the rock of Saint Dominic’s Preview, and the meditation of Veedon Fleece. In the 80s, after winning a Grammy for Into the Music, he turned toward the spiritual with Common One and Beautiful Vision, albums where the guitar and saxophone converse as if in a cathedral. By the 90s, songs like Days Like This or Have I Told You Lately proved he could be warm without losing his edge. And though the accolades —two Grammys, a Brit, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame— came late, his music always knew it didn’t need validation: it was enough to sound like himself.
