The story behind
Van Morrison wrote Spanish Rose in 1967, during a recording session at the A & R studio in New York. The song was recorded on March 29, under the production of Bert Berns, owner of the Bang Records label. Morrison and Berns had differences: the first wanted something more complex, while the second sought a more commercial sound, like that of the Brill Building hits.
The song incorporates Spanish guitar, marimbas and a two-step Latin rhythm. Some critics compare it to the flamenco style, while others see similarities with Brown Eyed Girl, due to its three-chord melody and lyrics that evoke moments from the past. It was released in 1968 as a single, together with Midnight Special in the United States and Who Drove the Red Sportscar? in the Netherlands. It also appeared on the album Blowin' Your Mind! and on several compilations.
