More about The Cranberries

Biography

Initially, their music was not particularly original, with punk rock guitars, catchy melodies and humorous lyrics, all composed by Niall. The group was originally called The Cranberry Saw Us, a wordplay that sounds similar to The Cranberry Sauce. The Hogan brothers lived in Moyross, Limerick, near the River Shannon, and after completing their compulsory education, they started working in their parents' bakery. At a concert, they met Fergal Lawler, who shared their musical interests and worked as a hairdresser in Parteen with his uncle. When Niall Quinn left the band in 1990, Dolores O'Riordan (born in Limerick on September 6, 1971) replaced him as the vocalist.

From then on, the group was renamed The Cranberries.Dolores became directly involved in Noel's musical repertoire, starting to write lyrics for the melodies. One of her first compositions, «Linger», became one of the group's biggest hits. Her distinctive vocal style, which included throat singing or yodeling, became one of the band's most recognizable features. Dolores' voice, capable of moving from a whisper to a scream in an instant, blended perfectly with the guitars and bass of the Hogan brothers, standing out as an additional instrument within their songs and albums.
