The story behind
Twenty One is the third track found on the album No Need to Argue by The Cranberries. The song, which lasts just over three minutes, was written by Dolores on September 6, 1992, coinciding with her twenty-first birthday. This personal detail lends an intimate layer to the composition, connecting directly with the artist at a significant moment in her life. The album itself, released on October 3, 1994, marked a shift in the Irish band's sound. Following the success of their debut, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, the group decided to explore a rawer and more powerful path on No Need to Argue.
This change was manifested in the incorporation of more distorted guitars and a generally higher volume, something that drummer Fergal Lawler attributed to the two years of promotional touring for their first record. The experience of playing live, accustomed to a powerful sound on stage, influenced the pursuit of a more robust sonority in the studio. The recording of No Need to Argue featured the engineering of Julie Gardner and Stephen Street, who also took on production, collaborating to shape this more pronounced sound that characterizes tracks like Twenty One. The album became The Cranberries' most successful, selling over 17 million copies worldwide by 2014.
