More about Goo Goo Dolls
Biography
Then came 1998, and with it, Dizzy Up the Girl, the album that catapulted them to stardom. Iris, written for the City of Angels soundtrack, became an unprecedented phenomenon: it spent eleven consecutive months on the Billboard Hot 100 and eighteen weeks at number one on airplay charts, even without being released as a single. It was a song that sounded like a romantic movie, but with the honesty of someone who doesn’t pretend to be perfect. Their later albums, like Gutterflower (2002) with Here Is Gone or Let Love In (2006) with Better Days, deepened that balance between rock and ballad, with lyrics about love, loss, and second chances. Rzeznik, now the band’s public face, wrote about exhaustion and faith with a naturalness few in 2000s pop-rock could match.
Over the years, the Goo Goo Dolls stopped chasing massive success to focus on what they do best: sounding like themselves. Boxes (2016) and Miracle Pill (2019) showcased a more mature band, but without losing the edge that made them unique. Even Chaos in Bloom (2022), produced by Rzeznik, recaptured some of the carefree energy of their early days, though now with the perspective of those who’ve lived through decades of music and life. They’ve sold over fifteen million records, earned four Grammy nominations, and still play stadiums, but what defines them isn’t the size of their stages—it’s that mix of rawness and tenderness that has always followed them. In the end, their story is one of a band that started screaming in a bar and ended up writing songs played at weddings, funerals, and movies, without ever ceasing to be, deep down, the same guys who once called themselves Sex Maggots.
