The story behind
The story behind Iris is fascinating, especially considering it was born from a very specific idea: that of a character willing to give up everything, even immortality, for the intensity of a human feeling. John Rzeznik, the composer, immersed himself in that idea when writing this ballad, thinking about the total surrender that loving someone deeply entails. This profound reflection on love and sacrifice became the heart of the song, transcending the film for which it was created.
Recorded as part of the soundtrack for the film *City of Angels* in 1998, Iris was also included on the Goo Goo Dolls' sixth album, Dizzy Up the Girl. The soundtrack creation process had a particular moment: Rob Cavallo, one of the producers, invited artists to see an early cut of the film to inspire them. The next day, Rzeznik presented this powerful ballad. The song was released as the first single from the album on April 1, 1998. The production was handled by Rob Cavallo along with the band itself, with Greg Burns, Rafa Sardina, and Allen Sides on recording engineering, and Jack Joseph-Puig on mixing. The musical structure of Iris features an interesting interplay, alternating between 4/4 time signatures in the intro and interludes, and 6/8 in the verses and chorus, with a brief 3/4 measure just before the second verse. Rzeznik himself used an unconventional guitar tuning, BDDDDD, to give it its characteristic sound.
