The story behind

The song Dreaming My Dreams by The Cranberries is presented as a piece of acoustic folk that invites introspection. Its atmosphere was built with the voice of Dolores O'Riordan and the accompanying instrumentation, creating an intimate sound. Although the studio version belongs to the album No Need To Argue, recorded in 1994, the song had several lives before and after that date. An acoustic version appeared in 1994 as part of the single Ode to My Family, captured on the BBC television program Later with Jools Holland. Another similar performance was heard in 1995 during the band's MTV Unplugged session, although this one did not have a commercial release. Later, in 1996, a live version was included in the single Free to Decide, recorded at The Point in Dublin, Ireland. The studio version, finally, also formed part of the single Stars, taken from the 2002 compilation Best Of.

Originally, Dreaming My Dreams was conceived as a potential fifth promotion for the album No Need To Argue in the United Kingdom and the fourth in the United States, with plans for a commercial release and a music video. However, these plans did not materialize. The band, in that same period, turned to recording their next work, To the Faithful Departed. The composition of this piece is attributed to Dolores O'Riordan, and the production was handled by Stephen Street along with Julie Gardner. The album No Need To Argue, released in 1994, became The Cranberries' most successful, selling over 17 million copies worldwide by 2014, and was characterized by a darker and more powerful sound compared to their debut.
