Santana

Santana is a rock music group originating from the United States, founded in San Francisco in 1966 by guitarist Carlos Santana. The band captured the public's attention with their performance of "Soul Sacrifice" at the Woodstock festival in 1969. This performance helped propel their first album, also titled Santana, followed by the successful Abraxas and Santana III in the two years that followed. The group's lineup changed frequently. The growing collaboration of Carlos Santana with the guru Sri Chinmoy led the group to adopt a more esoteric style, although maintaining its Latin essence. In 1998, Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Carlos Santana, José "Chepito" Areas, David Brown, Gregg Rolie, Mike Carabello and Michael Shrieve.

The band has received nine Grammy Awards and three Grammy Latino, the last in the year 2000. Carlos Santana received a Grammy as a solo artist in 1988. With over 90 million albums sold worldwide, Santana has become one of the best-selling groups of all time. In 2013, it was announced that the classic lineup would reunite for a new album, Santana IV, which was released in April 2016.In 2019, the band released the album Africa Speaks under the label Concord Records. The single "Los invisibles", with the collaboration of Spanish singer Buika and the production of Rick Rubin, served as a preview.Originally known as Santana Blues Band, the band was formed in 1966 in San Francisco, California.

More about Santana

Biography

The founding members included Carlos Santana (guitar), Tom Frazier (rhythm guitar), Mike Carabello (percussion), Rod Harper (drums), Gus Rodríguez (bass) and Gregg Rolie (keyboards and vocals). The group's first performance with this lineup took place at the Avalon Ballroom at the end of the summer of 1967. After the audition, Chet Helms, the event promoter, suggested that the band would not succeed in the San Francisco music scene playing Latin fusion, advising Carlos to keep his job as a dishwasher. Marcus Malone joined as the second percussionist to strengthen the group's Latin sound. However, when they began working on their debut album Santana, Malone had already left the band due to a murder conviction that led him to San Quentin State Prison.Bill Graham, one of the organizers of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, recommended Santana for the event.

Eventually, the group was included in the festival lineup, sharing the stage with artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and Joe Cocker. The band's debut album was released in August 1969, reaching number 4 on the US pop chart Billboard 200, with the single "Evil Ways" entering the Top 10.In 1970, they released the album Abraxas, which sold over a million copies. The recording began in mid-April 1970 at the Wally Heider studios in San Francisco and was completed in early May. The album, driven by a new version of "Black Magic Woman" by Fleetwood Mac (written by Peter Green, the song reached number 4 on the US chart Billboard Hot 100), was released in September 1970 and reached the top of the Billboard 200 chart.
