The story behind

Put Your Lights On, according to DoReSol

The song *Put Your Lights On* emerged from a very deep personal experience for Everlast. He wrote this track while recovering from a significant heart attack he suffered in February 1998. Everlast has described the song as one of the most intimate he has created, exploring hope from a dark place and questioning personal beliefs, while reaffirming aspects of the soul. His conversion to Islam in 1996 is reflected in the song's ending, where the words "La ilaha illa Allah" are heard, the first part of the Islamic profession of faith.

In 1998, Carlos Santana contacted Everlast to propose a collaboration on his album Supernatural. Everlast suggested *Put Your Lights On*, and according to him, Santana loved the idea, which accelerated the entire process. Everlast initially hesitated to include the Arabic part, out of respect for Allah's words, but Santana insisted it be kept. The song was released in August 1999 and reached number eight on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, in addition to winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 42nd ceremony. The album Supernatural, released in June 1999, marked a major commercial success worldwide, revitalizing interest in Santana's music.
