Whitney

After the impact of her first album, Whitney Houston returned in 1987 with Whitney, her second studio album. This work was released on June 2 of that year through Arista Records and consolidated her international presence. The album's sound remains in the vein of danceable pop and romantic ballads that had already worked on her debut, but with a greater exploration of the latter. Songs like I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) and So Emotional represent the energy of dance pop, while Didn't We Almost Have It All and Where Do Broken Hearts Go lean towards the emotional ballad.

About the album

Whitney, according to DoReSol

The album generated a total of six singles, including the duet I Know Him So Well with her mother, Cissy Houston. Four of these singles reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, an achievement that tied the record for studio albums by a female artist with the most number ones, matching George Michael's Faith released that same year. Whitney remained at the top of the American Billboard 200 albums chart for eleven weeks, and its first single, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me), reached number one in at least 13 countries, including the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Commercially, Whitney was a resounding success, earning diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America for sales equivalent to ten million copies in the United States. Globally, it is estimated to have sold over twenty-five million copies, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. Its impact was such that in 1989 it was also released in the German Democratic Republic.
