The story behind
On Whitney Houston's second studio album, titled Whitney and released in 1987, we find the song Love Is a Contact Sport. This track, which lasts 4:20, is the seventh on the album's tracklist and was written by Preston Glass. The production was handled by Narada Michael Walden, who also worked on other hits from the album such as I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) and How Will I Know.
The album Whitney was a major boost to Whitney Houston's career, consolidating her international fame. Six singles were released from this album, and four of them reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Whitney managed to tie a record at the time, being the studio album by a woman with the most number-one singles, tying with George Michael's Faith from the same year. The influence of her mother, Cissy Houston, and other great soul voices like Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin, can be felt in the artist's trajectory, who was discovered by Clive Davis of Arista Records while singing in New York clubs. Known as "The Voice", Whitney Houston had burst onto the music scene in 1985 with her self-titled debut album, which became the best-selling album by a female artist in history.
