Little Girl Blue

Nina Simone recorded this album in a New York studio in the fall of 1957. It was her first album as an artist, but it took some time to come out. The label, Bethlehem Records, delayed it, and in the end, it was released in February of 1959. There was no promotional song, and that frustrated her. Although she didn't want to, she eventually signed with another label, Colpix, in April of that year. In May, Bethlehem released a single, I Loves You, Porgy, which gave her her first hit. The song reached number 18 on pop and number 2 on R&B. The album also became a success because of that.

About the album

Little Girl Blue, according to DoReSol

The album has a jazz and gospel sound, as was her style. Some songs are on the list, like Mood Indigo or My Baby Just Cares for Me, which later would become a big hit in Europe. In 1987, that song played a lot again in the United Kingdom and in Europe. The album was reissued with a new cover and a different track order. It also included some extra tracks from the same recording. The story of how it was recorded is a bit confusing, but it seems that it was recorded in a studio called Beltone, with a bassist and a drummer. The session lasted more than thirteen hours, and fourteen songs were recorded, although only eleven were released.
