The album quickly became a phenomenon, reaching number one in twelve countries and selling millions of copies. Singles emerged from it that resonated deeply, such as "In My Place", which was the first song recorded and the one that propelled the band forward after a period of uncertainty, "The Scientist", "Clocks", and "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face". The composition of "Politik", for example, was marked by the shock of the September 11, 2001 attacks; Chris Martin wrote it and they recorded the piece just two days later, reflecting the confusion and fear of the moment. As for "Clocks", it arose from a piano riff that Martin composed one night, and although they initially thought of saving it for a future work, they finally decided to include it after the insistence of their team.
A Rush of Blood to the Head was not only a commercial success but also received great critical acclaim. The band won three Grammy Awards at the 45th ceremony, including Best Alternative Album. Later, at the 46th ceremony, "Clocks" took home the award for Record of the Year. The album has been included in important lists, such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 200 Best Albums of All Time in 2007, and was recognized as one of the best British albums of the last three decades at the 2010 Brit Awards. Even its iconic cover, created with a three-dimensional scanning technique, was commemorated on a series of British postage stamps.
